There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and a couple of dried fish
The Vestry and the Outreach Committee have determined that offerings for Loaves and Fishes need to be separated from the 5th-Sunday-of-the-month collections of pantry items and cleaning supplies for UCM and Koinonia.
The meal program at Carpenter's Shelter is a monthly event. The groceries for our night run about $100 each month. We have been using the Loaves and Fishes Fund which was healthy and robust when we used to have the collection for it on the 3rd Sunday of each month for the Route 1 Corridor feeding program.
Now that that fund is almost depleted (after 2-3 years of drawing down), we are returning to the pattern of passing a wicker basket, after the regular offering plates, to receive cash or checks designated for the Loaves and Fishes ministry. Once the Loaves and Fishes fund is sufficiently replenished we will take a hiatus from collecting until such time as we need to build it up again. Thank you for your generous support of this vital community ministry in which All Saints participates. If you are interested in cooking or serving, contact Renee O'Brien.

All Saints wants to re-activate SSAM -- the Seniors and Singles Assistance Ministry. SSAM works like this: Seniors who need assistance with household chores or home maintenance work make a donation to the church and a SSAM volunteer assists them as needed. Donors provide all materials. The "heavy lifting" is done by the volunteers. Everyone wins: the work gets done, the cost is less than a commercial odd-jobs service call, and the church gets a donation. We are putting together lists of what-needs-done and who-can-do-it.

Greetings in the name of the Lord!
By now I have had the opportunity to meet a number of you and am getting nicely settled in. Thank you all for your warm welcome. For those of you whom I have not had the chance to meet I hope the opportunity will come soon.
As way of some introduction I thought I would share a little bit about myself. I have been married to a wonderful man—Mike, who is retired from the Air Force and working for the State Dept—for nearly thirty years. (You will have a chance to meet him in a week or so.) We have two children: Patrick, an ensign in the Navy currently assigned to Pensacola, and a daughter, Beth, who is finishing her second year at Boston University.
I am one of those "cradle Episcopalians" but thanks to the military have had many ecumenical experiences. I was ordained to the vocational Diaconate in 1987 and served as a deacon in Belgium, North and South Dakota, and Virginia (officially and unofficially). I am a 1995 graduate of Virginia Theological Seminary, and was ordained to the priesthood in 2002.
I love to garden, read and sketch (though I am not very good it is relaxing). Over the next few months I am looking forward to being here worshiping and ministering with you.
I can be contacted through the church office. I will be in on Wednesdays and as needed.
In His Service,
(The Reverend) Donna Foughty

The summer issue of The Fishers will be coming out in late May / early June. Therefore, it's time to think about what you might want to put in that issue. Is there a project or event you want to publicize? Is there a person or group you want to recognize for something they have done? Does anyone in the following groups have something to say? Vestry; Sunday School; Choir; Altar Guild; Youth Group; Acolytes; Outreach; Bridge Club; etc. The Deadline is May 23. Thank you for getting your material in by this date. Fran Carter is the editor.

Sunday, May 30, marks the end of the 2003 - 2004 Teen and Adult Sunday School year. It has been a great year of learning for all participants. We will recognize the teachers on Sunday, June 6, during the 10:30 service. Note that the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Sunday School classes for children 3 - 12 continue during the Summer.

New date: June 5
Stone Soup Sunday, originally scheduled for May 2, was cancelled due to a forecast of inclement weather. It has been re-scheduled and is now Stone Soup Saturday on Saturday, June 5, which was a previously-scheduled Church Clean-Up day. We will start in the morning and have stone soup for lunch. There are many projects, big and small, to work on — see the project board in Gunnell Hall. Please plan to come.
Stone Soup Sunday, one of our many traditions at All Saints - Sharon Chapel, was conceived by the Rev. Ted Vorhees when he was here. Its name is derived from the Children's story about hungry soldiers bivouacked outside a village where the local residents were suspicious (perhaps even a little hostile). In order to entice the villagers to share their meager fare with them, the soldiers devised a plan.
In the middle of the village square, the soldiers set up a big black kettle over an open fire. In this kettle, they placed plenty of water and a large river stone. The villagers, of course, were very curious. They gathered around and one finally asked, "What are you cooking?," to which one soldier replied, "stone soup!" The villager peered into the pot, disbelieving, and said, "But you need potatoes for a proper soup," and added, "I will go home and get some for your soup." Another villager said, with authority, "You need an onion to flavor your soup; I will go home and get you one." A third one said, "Soup is not soup without a carrot or two; I'll go dig you some out of my garden." This went on and on until the pot was brimming with nutritious and delicious soup, all donated by the local folk, all except for the water and the stone.
Stone Soup Sunday here at Sharon Chapel is a lot of fun and, as a bonus, we get the grounds all cleaned up for spring. We have the big black kettle (donated by Amanda and Lacy Moyer who used to take charge of the soup making) which we fill with water and place over an open fire at the top of the stairs in the cemetery. And, of course, we have the large river stone—and we depend on you nice folks of the parish to bring the ingredients for this fantastic soup.
Everybody comes to the 10:30 service Saturday in their jeans or shorts or whatever they feel most comfortable to work in and they bring something for the pot, their tools for yard work after the service, a bag lunch breakfast to tide them over until about 3:00 or 4:00 o'clock around noon when the soup is declared done; and oh, my! — is it ever good! If you just want to hang around for the camaraderie, that's okay, too. But if you're able to work on the grounds, every helper is needed.
Don't forget to come this Sunday Saturday, June 5, and be prepared to enjoy yourself. Once or twice we were able to get the renowned John Jackson to come play guitar and sing. Sometimes we can get our guitar-playing members to play and we sit under the old oak tree and sing spirituals.
Note: John Jackson sometimes worked as a gravedigger at All Saints - Sharon Chapel. He is better known as a guitarist and singer famed for his work in the Piedmont guitar-picking blues tradition. See: John Jackson (1924 - 2002)

Come One, Come All, and Invite Your Friends
Coming soon! The All-Saints Silent Auction: a fundraiser for some of our projects. Our Silent Auction will be held in conjunction with the International Dinner on June 12. The dinner itself is a fund-raiser for the Outreach / Mission Committee, so a portion of the proceeds from the auction will support that ministry, and the rest will go towards other projects.
Our auction will feature two types of items: items that people donate to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, and items that people will bid for if someone comes forward to provide it. These items can be goods or services.
Examples of items that could be donated for our auction (or could be bid for in anticipation of a donation) could be anything like: Antiques; Babysitting; Baskets filled with goodies; Camp tuition; CDs; Clothes; DVDs; Gift certificates; Handyman / Handywoman assistance; Jewelry; Meals (gourmet or home-cooked); Sailboat or powerboat ride; Tax assistance; Use of a weekend home; Yard work assistance; Etc.
For more information, see Linda Ysewyn.

Thanks to the generosity of so many people, we have sufficient funds for Loaves and Fishes for the remainder of the year and then some. Therefore, as promised, we will not start the 3rd Sunday collections again until there is a need. The funds go to support the meals we provide at Carpenter's Shelter and the monthly sandwich ministry for the homeless. Thanks to those of you who are donating the hard-boiled eggs for that effort, the costs of providing those meals is significantly diminished as well. Just as Jesus provided for so many with the baskets of fish and loaves of bread, we are serving many hungry people with our own way of sharing our resources and love. Thank you.

We seem to be missing most of our white tablecloths. If you took them home to launder after Easter please return them at your earliest convenience.

It is hard to believe summer is almost half spent but the cicadas are gone, and the heat is on (along with the thunderstorms and crickets) and we keep on keeping on and Praising the Lord here at Sharon Chapel.
Our last big event was the parish retreat which, for those of you who were unable to attend, was a wonderful time of learning and sharing. A big thank you to the Raes, Alex Shepherd, Amy Spagna and all those who worked at making the retreat the great time it was. While things have slowed down a bit, there are some exciting things coming in the fall.
A BIG THANK YOU to all who came for the parish clean up day July 17. The grounds look wonderful—weeds were pulled, the old shed torn down—and in general really spiffed up.

Once again it's time to fill up the baskets with supplies needed for the less fortunate in our community. On August 29 and/or September 5, please come prepared to praise God and show thanks in a very real way for our own good fortune: Bring cleaning supplies of all kinds for the clients of Koinonia, and nonperishable foodstuffs for United Community Ministries. (Remember, the All Saints congregation extends into both the service areas of both organizations.)
Most especially, UCM's food pantry is in need of items for the homeless, canned foods (meats, tuna, tomato sauce, beans, and fruit), pasta, rice, and diapers. And both organizations can always use checks, checks and more checks. Baskets awaiting your gifts will be placed on the rear pew.
Koinonia has just sent us this special request:
Due to unusually high needs and costs of services by mid-year — and receipt of only about half of what is needed in individual donations so far — at the end of July expenses had exceeded income by over $34,200. If you can help, please send a financial donation to Koinonia, 6037 Franconia Road, Alexandria, Virginia, 22310. And thank you!
August 22, and August 29, 2004

As I was planning my sabbatical this spring and summer, I asked Margaret Oosterman and Paul Rae if they would assist the Rev. Donna Foughty, who was contracted to work two days a week, with the pastoral ministry of the parish. Margaret and Paul, as many of you know, are trained hospital chaplains and serve as lay chaplains at Alexandria Hospital. Many of you have experienced their skill and caring during this interim time.
I have asked Margaret and Paul to remain in this capacity as my "pastoral assistants", continuing their ministry in and to this parish. Margaret, Paul and I are working closely together to make certain that all pastoral needs are covered. This addition does not mean that I am cutting back in this area, but it does mean there will be more complete coverage and, I hope, a wiser use of time. And when I am ready, finally, to take that sabbatical next spring, they will be in place to assist the priest in charge.
I am enjoying this collegial relationship of mutual ministry and support, but please also know that those things shared in confidence, with any of us, will remain as such. I am excited about all of our ministries this year and the opportunity to serve in mutual ministry, in His name, with you.
Rachelle

A huge thank-you to all the participants who, in so many ways, made yesterday a huge success. We packed just short of 12,000 packet of oral rehydration salts.
Thanks for making soup, serving lunch, folding instructions, repairing envelopes, filling envelopes with salt, and being supply runners (our youngest volunteer supply runner was just four years old and was terrific). Thanks for welcoming our guests and spreading the word, thanks for bringing family and friends.
We here at Sharon Chapel were joined by a youth group from another church, high-school students doing community service work, middle-school and elementary-school students, Girl scouts, members of the Fairfax County Bar Association Foundation, and the Soroptimists of Woodbridge who initiated oral-rehydration projects in our area. Thanks so much to all of you for your prayers, donations, and participation! (earlier announcement)

With the beautiful golden amber landscape around us these days, it's natural to think about the bountiful harvest we are able to reap, but we should also think of those people who aren't as fortunate. As always in five-Sunday months, we will be collecting from our own bounty to make things better for those in need and for the people who are helping them.
All Saints contributes to United Community Ministries (UCM) and Koinonia. As usual, we will be bringing in nonperishable foodstuffs for United Community Ministries. However, this time, instead of the usual cleaning supplies, Koinonia stands in much greater need of just plain money, and they have written to tell us so.
So what does this mean for us? On the last two Sundays of the month we will collect for UCM: please bring in canned goods (soup, tomato sauce, tuna and canned meats, canned veggies, etc.) as well as cereals, jelly, boxed macaroni and cheese, and other pasta and rice products. Items for the homeless (individual-serving size food packs) are also good. These donations will be placed in boxes on the back pew. For Koinonia, we encourage parishioners to write checks made out to All Saints - Sharon Chapel, but earmarked for Koinonia, and to place them in the alms basin. These goods and monies will be delivered promptly to UCM and Koinonia by the Outreach Committee. Thank you!

As is our custom, we will gather on the first three Wednesday evenings in Advent, December 1st, 8th, and 15th, at 7:30 p.m., for a contemplative Eucharist. We will listen to the lessons telling us of the advent of our Lord, as a child in Bethlehem and at the "End of the Age", and observe periods of silence to meditate on these things and their meaning for our lives. On the final Wednesday evening, December 22nd, we will gather for the Greening of the Church — in time for our Christmas services.
November 21, 2004
Would you like to donate towards decorating the church with flowers and greens for the Christmas season? If so, please indicate below and place this in the collection plate along with your donation, or mail it to the church no later than December 19th.
