March 2006
Dear Friend,
My name is John DeDona and this coming May, 2006 (Police Week 8th to 14th) I will once again bicycle 250 miles (10th to 12th) to raise money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. I will ride with 250 other Law Enforcement Officers of the Police Unity Tour Chapter IV Organization; Virginia Beach, VA. Our journey begins in Chesapeake, VA, and ends at the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC. Police . Unity Tour members from our New York and New Jersey Chapters riding a southern route will join us at the Jefferson Memorial, and from there we will ride in unison the last six miles to the Memorial.
"We Ride for Those Who Died"
My fellow law enforcement brethren and I are riding to honor those who have died in the line of duty, as well as, to raise money for the Memorial that honors them. "We Ride for Those Who Died" is the motto of the Police Unity Tour. By Law, the Memorial cannot receive any funding from the government. All monies raised for the building and grounds, and to maintain the memorial come from private donations-from people like you.
As a participating Police Unity Tour member, I have been asked to raise $1,250.00 in pledges to support the memorial. I am asking for your help to reach, and perhaps, exceed this goal!
Rachelle has allowed me the opportunity to leave pledge forms on the table in the Narthex beginning this Sunday. I invite you to read more about the ride, and any sponsorship consideration will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
John A. DeDona

All Saints Sharon Chapel has been honored this year to have Father Bol Deng, a priest from the Southern Sudan, join us in worship as a visiting priest while he works on a graduate degree from the Virginia Theological Seminary.
As you probably know, Father Deng was forced by persecution and war to flee his home and be estranged from his family for 16 years. While absent from the Sudan, Father Deng completed his education and became an ordained priest. When he was able, at long last, to return to his family and his village in southern Sudan, he encouraged and assisted the people of his home village to build a school, making education once again available to the children of his birth place. The school has a building, teachers and books for the teachers. But it has few if any books for the children. That's where we come in.
All Saints - Sharon Chapel invites you to join in a Used book and Multi-media Sale on May 13th and May 20th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We will sell used or slightly used books of all kinds, and DVDs, videotapes, cassette tapes, records, televisions, computers, computer games, DVD players, etc. All proceeds will be donated to buy books for the school students in the southern Sudan. Start your spring cleaning with that book shelf or movie cabinet that you've been meaning to clean out. You can leave books, etc. at All Saints - Sharon Chapel. Then come on May 13th and/or May 20th and fill that shelf with new (new to you) books and music while you help give the children of Father Bol Deng's village the gift of reading. Donations to the cause would be warmly received as well.
Father Deng will visit the sale and would be happy to tell you much more about the situation in Southern Sudan and his hopes for the future of his home land and God's children there.
April 2, 2006
Update: Our book sale was a great success: nearly $2,000 was raised and presented to Father Bol Deng. It will be used to purchase books for the school in Sudan. Thanks to everyone who donated and purchased books.

This is the last Sunday Mary-Blair Valentine will be with us here at All Saints - Sharon Chapel, though she will always be part of our AS-SC family. During her time here she has given tirelessly of herself to the life and mission of this parish, particularly in the areas of administration and finance. With grateful hearts we wish her God's Peace as she begins a new phase of her Christian pilgrimage in North Carolina.
Mary-Blair leaves us with these thoughts:
The nice thing about saying good-bye to family is that it is not really good-bye as much as it is see you later, until next time, farewell until we meet again. So it is bittersweet as I depart for the joy of retirement living in the mountains of NC, but without all of you in tow. There will be adjustments on both sides as I meet a new set of parishioners and as Tracey becomes your treasurer. But life is never without changes and we will all adapt.
The hardest part of course will be to not have-you in my life as my friends on a regular weekly basis. AS-SC is my family. I will miss you terribly. This sacred place has been the main focus of my life since 1993 and I was an occasional worshiper even before that. You have seen me through numerous ups and downs of life — and have been unfailing in love and support. I have been blessed with all of you beyond measure.
The day I turned all the treasurer's equipment and supplies over to Tracey was very sad. I was asked if it felt like a burden lifted and I unhesitatingly said — absolutely not — I felt a great loss. I have been honored to serve you these many years. It was a ministry that suited my quiet and introverted personality and lifestyle. It was a way for me to serve you and our Lord in a way that worked for all concerned.
l will miss having that day-to-day contact and involvement in the life of Sharon Chapel.
I plan to keep in touch with you and will of course visit when I can. I am planning to join the retreat next Fall. See you then if not before.
Mary-Blair Valentine

As you are aware, your notices for the Sunday Bulletin need to be in the church office by 12:00 noon on Wednesdays (at the latest). This allows the bulletin to be printed and assembled on Thursday. Frequently, things of a pastoral or parochial concern come up after the deadline. If you know of such an item, please write it on a piece of paper and hand it to the priest-in-charge. Thank you.

The Vestry has decided to return to having The Fishers newsletter published monthly once again, starting in September. The editor, Fran Carter, requests that anyone who has articles for submission, suggestions for articles, or other suggestions to please put them in The Fishers box on the pew at the rear of the church.
In order to meet deadlines for editing, printing, and mailing the newsletter in a timely fashion, it is extremely important that articles be turned in by the submission deadline: normally the third Sunday of the month. Articles may be submitted incomplete and to-be-edited as long as basic facts are included along with contact information.
Fran hopes to get the congregation's thoughts and suggestions, to help make The Fishers both informative and interesting.

Tuesday, August 1, reception at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m.
Come enjoy an evening at The Little Theater of Alexandria as United Community Ministries (UCM) sponsors a benefit performance of Into The Woods by Steven Sondheim.
This enchanting and uplifting musical cleverly weaves the stories of well known fairy tale characters with that of a cursed baker and his wife. Desperate to break a curse that keeps them childless, the couple must provide the witch with a cape as red as blood and hair as yellow as corn. But once they satisfy the hag, will they live “happily ever after”? A funny and complex musical by America’s premier musical theater composer that examines what it is to be human as we travel into the woods.
Ticket price of $25 includes a reception before the show and dessert during intermission. For more information or to purchase tickets call Gale Curcio at 703-768-7106, ext. 327.
United Community Ministries is a private, non-profit human services agency that has assisted the low-income in the community for over 30 years. The agency's mission is to help others achieve self-sufficiency. For November, we meet and dine at the Paradiso Ristorante Italiano (6124 Franconia Road, 703-922-6222). It’s a great opportunity to dine, visit, and raise funds for the church. It's also a great evangelism opportunity. We hope to see you there!
Each restaurant has a different fundraising routine. For Paradiso , please bring the bulletin insert and give it to the cashier when you order. If you are not in church on Sunday, please see me at Paradiso and I will get you one. Paradiso will seat us all in a separate room so we can dine together. They also have a separate room just for the children which is quite popular.

On Wednesday evening, November 22, we will gather once again to give thanks to God for the many blessings we have received. The Holy Eucharist (Greek for thanksgiving) will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Please join us as we remember the true meaning of this holiday and the One who creates in us grateful hearts.

On Wednesday, November 29, at 7:30 p.m., we will gather in Gunnell Hall for a travelogue program, to see our Rector's photographs and hear her speak about her sabbatical in Europe this past summer. Please join us, and bring a dessert to share, if you can.

We will again offer an Advent program, this year beginning on Wednesday, December 6, and continuing on December 13 and 20. The program will begin with soup supper at 6:30 p.m. in Gunnell Hall, followed by discussion and Compline. We will aim to be finished by 8:15 p.m. Led by our seminarian, Tim Grayson, the program will focus on the Gospel readings assigned for the last three Sundays in Advent. We will discuss these readings in light of the traditional Advent themes in preparation for Christ's birth and his second coming as Judge of the Last Day. How do these readings speak to us in our own day? What might we decide to do differently in our lives after reading and reflecting on them. Please sign-up (on the Church kitchen door) to bring food to share and mark your calendars.

We are looking for someone to assist the treasurer. We are working to change the treasurer's job to make it possible for 2 or 3 people to share the work, rather than have one person do it all alone. If you are interested in putting your accounting or financial skills to work for the church as part of your personal ministry, we would like to hear from you. The work requires 2 to 3 hours per week. Some of the work can be done at home, while some (about an hour per week) has to be done at the church. We would prefer to have someone within the church help us, rather than have to look for a part-time professional from outside the church. Please contact Tracey McDaniel, the Rector, Rich Schoen, or any Vestry member for more information.
