The Rev. Sarah Colvin

Priest in Charge

The Rev. Sarah Margaret Colvin, MD (Sarah) joins All Saints Sharon Chapel officially as Priest in Charge beginning on March 6, 2023. She recently moved to the area from Vashon, WA. She is a second career priest whose final job before her big switch was the deputy chief medical examiner for the District of Columbia.

Following her call with affirmation from her parish and the diocese, she resigned from the medical world in 2011 to attend Virginia Theological Seminary (MDiv). She was ordained to the transitional diaconate in December 2013 and the priesthood in June 2014 in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington.

After seminary, she attended University of Virginia – because she just wasn’t done with the study of Ethics! – and received a second Master of Arts in Religious Studies (MA). While in Charlottesville, she served as Priest Associate at St. Paul’s. In 2016, she became Rector of St. Patrick’s, Falls Church, and in 2018 she answered a call to serve as Rector of Church of the Holy Spirit, Vashon, WA (2018-2022).

She grew up in San Antonio, Texas, attended Cornell University for undergraduate studies, majoring in Nutritional Biochemistry (1987), and went on to medical school in Dallas, UTSW (1991). She trained a year in pediatrics and then switched to pathology; she has many medical board certifications that don’t matter as a priest! She has two grown children, a son and a daughter in their 30s. She is married with two dogs and two cats and one three-legged dog-cat/ cat-dog.

She brings a stability and an embrace of diversity, with her own family including multiracial children, a niece and a nephew, and grandchildren. During seminary and at UVA, she focused passionate attention on the spiritual and ethical issues around gun violence. She believes strongly in the power of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and did her level one training with Davette Himes.
